Breeding Wheat for Rust Resistance: Conventional and Modern Approaches

چکیده
Three rusts are destructive, diminishing produce and nutritious value significantly, affect food availability consequently security through reductions in yield. In agricultural research institutes with mandate of wheat improvement, incorporating genes resistant against rust is matter routine. The dilemma has been addressed the most, leading to discovery principles plant breeding for resistance e.g. gene disease inherit following Mendelian genetics, concept genetic diversity theory. Two strategies being followed. 1- Conventional 2- Advanced. Among conventional approaches selection hybridization well known. However found short lived may also be durable certain cases. Durability desired explored widely. generally attained incorporation effective at adult stage combination quantitative genes. Application biotechnology improve productivity usage molecular markers pyramiding substantiates existence in, confirming released cultivars pure. This involves that precise pertinent across extensive ranges breeders’ germplasm. review article encompasses all features development application different techniques improvement. However, despite novel accelerated breeding, pathogen producing more virulent strains. Consequently, a continuous process.

Breeding for Salt-Resistance Using Transgressive Segregation in Spring Wheat
Hybrid populations (F3) derived from cross between four moderate salt-resistant spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were assessed for transgressive segregation of salt-tolerant genotypes allowing germination and emergence at 350 mM NaCl for 30 days. The achieved Selection intensity was the order of 0.24-0.27 in these segregation populations (22-25 seedlings from 9000 seeds). Assessment of trans...
متن کاملThe past, present and future of breeding rust resistant wheat
Two classes of genes are used for breeding rust resistant wheat. The first class, called R (for resistance) genes, are pathogen race specific in their action, effective at all plant growth stages and probably mostly encode immune receptors of the nucleotide binding leucine rich repeat (NB-LRR) class. The second class is called adult plant resistance genes (APR) because resistance is usually fun...
متن کاملHarnessing Diversity in Wheat to Enhance Grain Yield, Climate Resilience, Disease and Insect Pest Resistance and Nutrition Through Conventional and Modern Breeding Approaches
Current trends in population growth and consumption patterns continue to increase the demand for wheat, a key cereal for global food security. Further, multiple abiotic challenges due to climate change and evolving pathogen and pests pose a major concern for increasing wheat production globally. Triticeae species comprising of primary, secondary, and tertiary gene pools represent a rich source ...
متن کاملDiversity of Resistance Gene Analogues in Rust Resistance and Susceptible Bread Wheat Varieties
Fungal diseases, especially leaf and stripe rusts are wheat yield reducing factors in Iran and the world. In this study, genetic diversity of 20 wheat varieties with different response to leaf and stripe rusts were studied using primers designed based on the conserved regions of plant disease resistance genes. The banding patterns of polymorphic markers were scored as dominant and number of amp...
متن کاملDoubled Haploids versus Conventional Breeding in CIMMYT Wheat Breeding Programs
Doubled haploid (DH) technology has been used in breeding programs for several decades and is currently the method of choice in a number of crop species, including barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), rapeseed (Brassica napus L.), maize (Zea mays L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). In this study we investigated via computer simulation the benefit of using DHs compared with the conventional wheat bre...
